Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries will exhibit the phenomenon of voltage hysteresis when large current discharge is carried out after long-term small current or long-term storage.


Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries are non-rechargeable lithium metal batteries, and their electrolyte and positive electrode material are both thionyl chloride. When metallic lithium reacts with thionyl chloride, lithium chloride oxide products are generated, which will attach to the surface of metallic lithium, forming an oxide film (also known as a passive film). This oxide film can prevent the continuous rapid reaction. In other words, the oxide film plays a protective role on the negative electrode metal lithium, which is also the reason why lithium thionyl chloride batteries have the characteristic of long-time storage.


After the lithium chloride protective film is formed, the internal reaction stops relatively, rather than absolutely. As long as the battery is left idle, the extremely slow chemical reaction in the interior will gradually thicken the passive film, which causes the internal resistance of the battery to change over time.


It is precisely because of the formation of the passive film that the annual self-discharge rate of lithium thionyl chloride batteries at normal temperature is very low (less than 1% for energy-type and less than 2% for power-type). With the energy density of up to 700wh/kg, lithium thionyl chloride batteries have become the absolute star products in the field of low-power, long-life applications in the IoT.

The lagging phenomenon of lithium thionyl chloride batteries manufactured by Li SOCl2 battery manufacturers cannot be completely solved by internal formula at present, but it can be eliminated through some methods in actual applications.


Taking ER14505M as an example, if it is stored for half a year before use, it can be activated by discharging with a 15Ω resistor for 10-20 minutes before use.
